Why I chose Adelaide over Sydney and Melbourne
When you tell people you're moving to Australia, they hear "Sydney or Melbourne". Those are the two cities in every movie, every uni brochure, every cousin's Instagram. When I said Adelaide, the standard reply was "…where?" A few years later, I'm still here, still smug about it. Here's my honest case.
01. Your money simply goes further
Rent is the moving-abroad boss battle, and Adelaide makes it a fair fight. The money that gets you a faraway shoebox in Sydney gets you a decent place close to the city here. Early on — when you're studying, job hunting, or building from zero — that breathing room changes everything. Less financial stress means you can actually say yes to life instead of calculating every coffee.
02. Twenty minutes to everything
Adelaide runs on what locals jokingly call "the 20-minute rule": beach, hills, city, airport — all roughly twenty minutes from each other. My friends in the big cities lose two hours a day to commuting. I lose twenty minutes, and half of that is choosing a podcast. You don't realise how much life this returns to you until you have it.
03. It's the perfect "learn Australia" city
Big cities can swallow a newcomer. Adelaide is gentle — small enough to learn quickly, big enough to have everything: universities, hospitals, an actual food scene, festivals all summer (they call it the Festival State for a reason), and a proper Indian community when you're missing home. Confidence builds fast when the city isn't constantly overwhelming you.
04. The honest cons — because I promised honest
- The job market is smaller. Fewer companies than Sydney or Melbourne, especially in some corporate fields. Depending on your industry, this is either a non-issue or the deciding factor — be real with yourself about which.
- It's quieter. If your dream is skyscraper energy and 3am dumplings, Adelaide will feel sleepy. My 3am energy is sleeping, so we're compatible.
- Friends will keep asking why you're not in Melbourne. You will develop a speech. This article is mine.
05. The real answer
Adelaide gave me what a newcomer actually needs: a life I could afford, time I could use, and space to grow — and it quietly became home. It's my base camp, not my cage. The whole world is still on the list, and the channel will take you along when I go. But there's something to be said for a city that lets you build your dream instead of just paying rent on it.
